Home Made Tartar Sauce


Nothing to this one! An absolute necessity with Fish and Chips! Also makes a great sandwich spread.

The name Tartar Sauce probably comes from the French loosely meaning 'rough' in a reference to the Tartars of Mongolia who lived in a wild and savage manner. It has no connection with Steak Tartar in a culinary sense.

Tartar Sauce Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup (250ml) mayonnaise
  • 1 small onion, or a shallot, finely chopped
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) green relish
  • 3 small sweet gherkins, diced
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) lemon juice
  • METHOD:

    Combine all ingredients together and chill - usually tastes best made 24 hours ahead, but this is not essential.
