Butter Tart Squares

  • 1 cup (8 oz - 240 gm) butter or margarine
  • 2/3 cup, packed (4¼ oz - 120 gm) brown sugar
  • 2½ cups (10 oz - 280 gm) all purpose white flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups, packed (12¾ oz - 360 gm) brown sugar
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) flour
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp (3 ml) salt
  • 1/2 cup (4 oz - 120 gm) melted butter
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) vanilla extract
  • 3 cups (1lb - 450 gm) raisins
  • 1 cup (4¼ oz - 122 gm) chopped walnuts



Bottom Layer:
Cut the first three ingredients: butter, brown sugar and flour together until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Press into an ungreased 18"x9" (46cm x 23 cm) baking pan, or 2 smaller pans.
Bake at 350°F or 180°C for 15 minutes.
Top Layer:
Mix eggs and 2 cups brown sugar together, and combine with the remaining ingredients until mixed.
Spread over the baked bottom layer.
Bake at 350°F or 180°C for about 20 minutes until top is crackled and brown.
Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
